What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins often appear as twisted lumps or bobbles on which disappear when pressed. Not all varicose veins are visible, they may cause the following symptoms :-

  • Heavy and aching legs
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Throbbing burning pains
  • Leg muscle cramps
  • Dry, itchy or ‘flakey’ skin just above the ankle (varicose eczema)
  • Pigmentation above the ankle or a brown staining of the leg.
  • Leg ulcers
  • Superficial thrombo-phlebitis – an inflammation of the varicose veins which leads clot forming the varicose vein which becomes hard to the touch, with a severe burning sensation. These symptoms can be confused with symptoms and a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and should be investigated thoroughly.

Patients may not suffer symptoms but varicose veins do tend to deteriorate with age and reduced mobility leading to more severe symptoms in later life:-

  • Bleeding varicose veins – a minor knock to varicose veins can cause severe bleeding.
  • Venous ulcerationsevere venous insufficiency reduces the ability for the body to repair damage and fight off infection. These may not only prolong the healing process of minor knocks and scratches to the lower leg but may result in extension of the wound.

EARLY AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OF VARICOSE VEINS CAN REDUCE THE RISK OF SEVERE PROBLEMS IN LATER LIFE.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They also are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. Often, they are red or blue. They can look like tree branches or spiderwebs with their short, jagged lines. They can be found on the legs and face and can cover either a very small or very large area of skin. They are usually asymptomatic, but patients can develop an itchy sensation or burning.

Spider veins may be associated with underlying varicose veins and may have similar symptoms to varicose veins. It is important that spider veins are fully investigated using ultrasound to identify associated varicose veins. Failure to treat the underlying varicose veins may result in early recurrence of spider veins.

At Diagnostic Healthcare we understand the busy lifestyles we all lead, our aim is to provide professional accurate diagnosis followed by the safest and most comfortable treatment for you with the minimum disruption to your life.

We believe 80% of patients will benefit from minimally invasive treatment of veins by radiofrequency ablation which should take less than an hour and following treatment you will be encouraged to resume most normal activities within 20 minutes of treatment.

Whether you are referred for NHS treatment or on a self-pay basis, you will be invited to attend our private facilities in Altrincham.
