Breast MRI Scans

Breast MRI Scans

MRI of the breast offers valuable information about many breast conditions that cannot be obtained by other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound.

Breast MRI scans can be performed at all our locations. Your results will be sent by post to your home and to your GP or consultant, five days after the examination. You will need to discuss your results with your GP in the first instance.

PIP Implants

PIP implants have been reported to be at risk of rupture and silicone leaks. For women with these implants an MRI scan is the best test for determining whether the silicone implants have ruptured.

The Department of Health has published the following statements:-

‘The latest advice from the NHS and plastic surgery experts is that women with PIP breast implants do not need to have them removed unless they have symptoms such as pain and tenderness.’

‘There is no link to cancer and there is no clear evidence of an increased risk of harm compared to other brands of breast implants.’

How is the procedure performed?

For an MRI of the breast, you will lie face down on a platform specially designed for the procedure. The platform has openings to accommodate your breasts and allow them to be imaged without compression.
